What is Color Guard?
Color Guard is a performance activity that uses dance, flags, rifles, and other equipment to bring music to life—usually alongside a marching band. We perform at football games, competitions, and events, combining movement, coordination, and visual storytelling. It’s athletic, artistic, and a ton of fun!
Who can audition for the Color Guard?
All students who will be in 9th to 12th grade at Somerville High School (or VoTech / SALA) during the 2025-2026 school year, are eligible to audition for the Color Guard! SMS & BCMS 8th Grade students are encouraged to attend to meet new people before they begin their high school career!
What will auditions be like? Should I bring anything?
Auditions will be fun, low-pressure, and open to all skill levels! There is zero dance or performance experience needed - we will teach you everything you'll need to know.
We will review dance and flag technique, then move onto a short dance and equipment piece. Veteran members may choose to audition on weapon, but first year members will only be responsible for auditioning on dance and flag. Potential members may expect to perform their dance or equipment piece in small groups, though perfection is not expected!
We will provide all equipment, just be sure to wear athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes. Also, don’t forget to bring water!
What is the schedule like? Can I participate in other activities?
Training rehearsals are held throughout the summer to assist in learning technical skills and building confidence. In August, a two-week Band Camp is held to learn choreography and drill for our 2025 production.
During the school year, rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM, with football games on Friday nights and competitions on the weekend. A full schedule can be found HERE for all games and competitions.
We have many students that participate in multiple activities! All students must ensure that they communicate clearly with both activity advisors about scheduling needs to confirm that participation in both activities is possible, but generally multiple commitments can be possible!
I have more questions - who can I reach out to?
If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to Breanna Ferenzi at [email protected]
We look forward to hearing from you soon!
